"In the adult the space of acceptance is never whole, yet it is in the child. The child is really capable of listening impartially and unselfishly, the child is receptive to the greatest degree."
Sofia Cavalletti
The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Children is offered here in Chippewa Falls. But what is CGS?
It is a catechetical program for children ages 3-12 (limited in our community to ages 3-5). It is a program of religious formation tailored to the child, that helps them further develop their relationship with God through tangible works. A "work" is Montessori-lingo for an activity that involves particular materials and accompanying steps that a trained adult initially leads the child through. The methodology of CGS is rooted in Sacred Scripture, the Liturgy, and the educational philosophy of Maria Montessori.
In the words of the United States Association of The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd:
We believe that God and the child have a unique relationship with one another, particularly before the age of six; that growth of this relationship should be assisted by the adult, but is directed by the Spirit of God; that children need their own place to foster the growth of that relationship; and that the child’s spiritual growth is best served through tangible but indirect means.

Our children are discovering and exploring both liturgical and scriptural Montessori-based materials specifically designed to help lead the child into a deeper relationship with the Good Shepherd. One characteristic of a child this age is independence, therefore we strive to answer this call for the child with our motto being: “Help me fall in love with God by myself.”
